why do people get so offended when someone says shit like “i hit pro shippers with my car”? like obviously theyre not really hitting anyone with their car, so why are you mad if its just pretend? do you think their words have impact even if theyre not actually literally hitting you with a car? even if theyre only pretending to? even if its fictional it can hurt and effect real people? so you agree, fiction effects reality?

this blew up quicker than i thought and pretty much every “anti anti” type person in the notes is jumping to their usual wild conclusion victim complex of “OH SO HARASSMENT IS OK? YOURE DEFENDING HARASSMENT!!!!” even though the post itself is sarcastic and using the statement as an example of how hypothetical words can affect real life people, not a justification of it. but its also very obviously a general statement, not an example of a targeted harassment campaign against one person or people.

its a hyperbolic joke that gets repeated a lot, and its not one that i myself echo, but its certainly not an example of harassment and more along the lines of, well, just a bad faith joke. and we all agree that those are still bad right? we all agree that say, homophobic or sexist jokes or whatever, are bad because they are words that impact the real world and the people who live in it? (and this is not on the same level at all because those are actual oppressed groups). but we agree that making fun of people is bad because it hurts their feelings and we cant hide behind the idea that its just a joke, right? because our words impacted them in the real world, right?

so if “its just fiction” is an excuse, how come “its just a joke” isnt an excuse? how come when someone makes jokes like that, you dont think its okay? but somehow when its “just a drawing” or “just a fanfic” its alright? how come the ideals represented in your words and actions, however hypothetical they may be, suddenly lose meaning only when its convenient to you?

I feel like the conversation around "cancel culture" is inherently disingenuous because half the people in it are defining cancel culture as "experiencing consequences for shitty actions" and the other half are defining it as "online spaces dogpiling people for vague hearsay of a vaguely problematic thing they may or may not have actually done fifteen years ago, and may have been entirely made up by people who have personal beef with them."

One is good. One is very bad. But they both get referred to by the same term, and that's...an issue.

Like, if I hear somebody complaining about "cancel culture," what do they mean? Did they say something racist and get called out for it, or are they being smeared and called an abuser by a bunch of te/rfs because they participate in BDSM, and nobody bothered to fact check it before hurling around really serious accusations?

I was going to follow you after seeing your muscle man post but I noticed that you're one of those asexy weirdos. Aro/ace people aren't oppressed and not wanting a relationship doesnt make you oppressed. Stop trying to wedge your way into pride if you didnt fight for it.

apathetic-coffee answered:

you know who else sees lgbt pride as the opression olympics and gatekeeps who and who can’t celebrate it?

yes i participated in a large-scale online harassment campaign towards a minority orientation for years that has left most of the affected community noticeably, literally traumatized but i don’t CARE anymore so it doesnt matter okay? thats CRINGE now you know. you need to get off my back for what i did a couple years ago because it doesn’t matter anymore. no i do not support this community in any way beyond declaring that i don’t actively hate them and yes my “acceptance” is entirely conditional on the members of this orientation never requesting that i acknowledge or take any kind of accountability for what i did to them but STOP fucking calling me out, im totally not an exclusionist anymore, GOD,

The most insidious types of fandom racism that actively promotes itself on tumblr and elsewhere (folk who write thousand word essays about how hard it is not to be racist writing fanfiction and etc, and “coming up with a definition for the antis™” that largely focuses on fans of color talk about things that trigger them), all appear to have had roots in the mainstream (and very white) LiveJournal community before the 2007 migration.

And the worst thing about knowing that, is knowing that people listen to them like the grand authorities on all things fandom because their “fandom old”, but they’re lacking in any kind of real wisdom because they’re content to ignore the people who are affected the most by the issues they claim to know better than anyone.

diversehighfantasy

Yup. That LJ bubble mentality won’t die.

As messy as it is, fandom in the age of social media is so much more inclusive now, and a lot of “fandom olds” can’t seem to understand that they can’t run people out when they’re criticized anymore. They turn that into nostalgia, and it gets into people’s minds that those times were nicer, simpler, better. And whenever yt people pine for simpler times, it means a time when Black people stayed in their place.

elfyourmother

As a black fandom old, fuck the “good ol days” when str8 women ‘splained to LGBT fans and racists wrote 90000 page essays defending their shitty white boys fucking against the backdrop of the Haitian earthquake fic and “pls warn for rape in your fics” was a controversial opinion that required weeks and weeks of arguing on metafandom and got survivors harassed out of fandom

I don’t trust a single white fan pining for LJ, not one. them days were good for no one but a select group of privileged bullies who are now angry that they’ve lost a modicum of that privilege and that the marginalized ppl they silenced and terrorized have a louder voice now

i think it’s really amazing how total strangers who have nothing in common but their shared love of a work of fiction will come together across distances and dedicate their time and energy working collaboratively to build an extensive, richly detailed fanon that completely fucking sucks

you guys are so committed to being bad at interpreting things you’ll just straight up decide this post means the opposite of what i wrote and reblog it anyway

Shoutouts to this guy for being right yet only being visible in the notes next to a goon who posted this cap next to a No Fun Allowed sign and completely missed the point of both what they and the original post was saying

I have literally seen so much characterization and nuance(and you know, actual narrative meaning) sanded off of characters so that they can fit into the generic fandom mould for incorrect quotes or shipping art or fics, ending up as carbon copies of every other fandom's sanded-down characters in the process

Hello. Is it true that Egoraptor once requested child pornography? I need to know if this is 100% true because, as a legitimately autistic Sonic the Hedgehog fan, I've been looking to take him down for spreading hate about my special interest for twenty years.

Do you consider yourself an "anti"?

tratserenoyreve answered:

no im a person with a functioning brain is what i am, the internet trying to reduce this down to just some ideological difference with bizarro reductionist terms to try and reframe the issue at hand as a simple disagreement on preference is fvcking ridiculous and only serves to protect those who can and have fvcked up actual real people.

if you look at the image of, explicit representation of, what is in context and confirmed as a 9 year old child and go “what if they had s3x”, that is a problem, that is not healthy behavior, and to treat that me being appalled by and hating that people are spreading written and drawn child p*rnography is just me being some “anti” is like. where is your head even at, where did everyone’s critical thinking skills go?

please take a minute to evaluate the actual issue at hand.

tratserenoyreve

like i KNOW exactly what sort of idea you wanted to plant by asking me this, that you wanted it to then become a conversation of just likes and dislikes, to try and have me sorted into the internet faction war so you can have me labelled as just the other, a faceless amorphous group that can simply be treated as lol internet discourse.

but! i ain’t having that shit! not today!

the rhetoric of “anti” and its counterpart “anti anti” only serve to pull attention away from the root issue, which is the COMPLETELY SANE AND NORMAL revulsion to people on the internet trying to convince other people on the internet that it’s okay to s*xualize children and the imagery of children.

get outta here with that shit. i’ve been around for too goddamn long, been thru too goddamn much, to even ENTERTAIN the idea that people doing this is okay.

and like consider too how i have to repeatedly declare my discomfort with people entering my space with my content who behave in this way, how people are repeatedly trying to poke at the boundaries i have every right to have.

absolutely bonkers.
